The Australian Federal Police (AFP) is evaluating a referral from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) over betting agency William Hill's in-play betting, but it is understood the AFP's response has nothing to do with the Australian Open.
In a statement the AFP told AdNews the referral, received in December, was in relation to a potential breach of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. The police would now evaluate it before deciding whether to launch an investigation.
William Hill defended its sponsorship of the grand slam after an article in the Herald Sun claimed it was being investigated by the federal police and had received criticism by the Victorian government. It is understood the AFP's response has nothing to do with the Australian Open.

Yesterday, AdNews revealed William Hill had seen a 258% year-on-year rise in the volume of in-play betting over the first two days of the Australian Open.
Tennis Australia has also backed the William's support of the event and clarified that its SlamTracker data is not used by the betting agency for betting.
